A deep valley carved into the schist with vines supported by stone terraces the Douro makes some of Portugal’s most iconic wines. Famous for making port wines the port lodges have been turning their hand to making table wines with considerable success. Grape varieties associated with port wines such as Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca are making red wines with wonderfully concentrated red and black fruit flavours, violet, coffee and spice. White grape varieties such as Gouveio, Rabigato, Cerceal and Malvasia Fina give lovely creamy mineral flavours. If you love Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz or a creamy Chardonnay then give the wines of Douro a try!
