About Tras-os-Montes
Literally translated as ‘behind the mountains’ this is the wild remote area of north east Portugal, the hinterland beyond the Douro.
This wine region is tucked behind the mountains of the Serra Alvão separating it from the coastal vinho verde region. Isolated and sparsely populated with ancient superstition and pagan rituals it is a harsh environment with extremes of temperature, snowbound in winter and baking hot summers. Inhospitable but the vines love it!
The cool nights help to retain all the aromas and flavours of the grapes. The wines are mostly and usually made with Douro grape varieties. These wines are rarely seen outside the region and much less outside Portugal!
Our favourite example of wines from this region is Quinta Sobreiro de Cima made with Touriga Nacional with its floral and herby aromas and flavours of mature fruit, a great Portuguese alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon!
