Wonderful expression of Jaen grapes (known as Mencia in Spain) from Quinta da Boavista in Penalva do Castelo east of Viseu. The vineyards are tended and the wines are made by Joao Tavares da Pina ably assisted by his wife Luiza and their daughters. The cooler climate along with the presence of marine sediments (unusual in Dao, an upland area of granite) hold water for longer allowing for a longer growing cycle, delivering ripe tannins but retaining the delicate aromas. The quinta is virtually organic surrounded by forests and wild flowers.
No commercial yeasts are added and spontaneous fermentation takes place. The wine spends 6 months on the lees and four years in old oak barrels.
Joao is also an accomplished chef and his wines are highly gastronomic. He enjoys preparing the perfect meal to take his guests through their range of wines which stretch back into the 1990s.
This wine has forest fruit and sweet spice with medicinal notes, medium body, beautifully structured and balanced with a long and persistent finish. Beautiful Jaen. To be enjoyed with food.
